Definitely not his best first meeting.

Silas Cabot’s hands clenched at his sides. He coughed. His throat burned. Since when were his office lights so bright? His head pounded like a big bass drum. He pressed his fingertips to his temples.

He moved to his desk chair that the Princess had just vacated. He dropped onto it. In that moment, it felt as though the pressure of the world was weighing on him.

His first in-person meeting with the Princess had been an utter disaster—a disaster of the most significant proportion. If his head would stop hurting, he would figure out how to fix this situation. He yanked open his desk drawer and removed a bottle of painkillers. With two white pills in his palm, he moved to the little fridge and retrieved a bottle of water.

After he downed the pills, he returned to his desk. He wasn’t used to being dismissed. People constantly vied for him to take on their account. He only took the cream of the crop.

And being fired by the Princess of Rydiania was going to cripple his company. Once word got out, and it would get out, his company would crumble. No amount of explanations would undo this damage. The people he dealt with cared more about appearances than the truth.

Worst of all, the merger he’d been working on for the past year would fall apart. He couldn’t let that happen. He couldn’t let some spoiled princess destroy his life’s work—a woman who clearly thought someone else would pick up the pieces for her.

The truth of the matter was he had been on his way back to the office after stopping at his mother’s house with plenty of time to spare. He’d asked his driver to stop for an afternoon coffee. And that’s when his plans had begun to unravel.

He stopped his mind from returning to that chilling memory.

Things had certainly gone awry, but it didn’t mean they couldn’t be righted. There wasn’t a chance he was giving up on the royal account. This was just a small setback. It could be remedied.

He had to do something he wasn’t accustomed to doing—he had to grovel. Just the thought rubbed him the wrong way. He should have anticipated something like this when he’d taken on a princess as a client.

Before he changed his mind, he sat down at his desk. “Gladys.”

When his assistant didn’t appear at the doorway, he recalled that she’d left for the day. If only his head would quit hurting, he could think clearly. Another bout of coughing overtook him.

After a quick internet search, he found one of the florists he used for business purposes. He called and found the shop was closed. He tried another. It too was closed. On the third try, he reached a florist that was open.

“This is Silas Cabot. I need a bouquet delivered.”

“Yes, sir. What day do you need them there?”

“Today.”

“Sir, I’m sorry but we’re closing for the evening.”

Silas cleared his throat. “I’ll make it worth your time.”

“But my driver is gone for the day.
